French Bulldog Pet Portrait
Pet Portraits by Helen Chugg
The French Bulldog (click name to view full sized image) is becoming a very popular breed of dog. The origin of the modern French Bulldog breed descends directly from the dogs of the Molossians, an ancient Greek tribe. They are bright and a playful breed.
What appealed to me when deciding to painting this portrait was how the dog has the light behind him, and the way it filters the colours through his ears. The original photograph was taken in autumn so had that lovely autumnal feel to the colours. Having the tonal pink shades as the background emphasises the pink through his ears.

I paint my portraits adding layer on layer to gain depth and so achieving a realistic portrayal. I tend to work randomly around the paper until I’m satisfied I have all the shapes correct in terms of light and shades. Then I will add layers of colour before finally the detail.
Many of my clients will give me some background information on their pet, and with other photos, I feel I can get a good idea of their personality. The personality can be portrayed through the glint in the eyes, facial expression, or how they hold their ears. All this is individual and something a good artist can see and bring to life in their art.
